Habitat Diver Program for the Oregon Coast Aquarium
Why take this course?

Become a Volunteer Diver for the Oregon Coast Aquarium! What do divers do at the Oregon Coast Aquarium? Our divers help with animal care, interpretive dive shows during summer, and research dives in the open water. But we also have need of tenders and other support personnel. If you are an active cold water diver and are interested in honing your skills, learning new techniques, staying active as a diver and giving something back, we invite you to come to our next Recruiting Day and check out the dive program!

What do I need to start?

  • Attend the next scheduled Recruiting Day at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. If interested please contact: Beth Hawkyard or Diana Hollingshead to RSVP your spot.

  • Minimum age: 18 years old

What will I do?

The Recruiting Day will help to determine if becoming a Volunteer Diver is for you. If it is, we will schedule you for training, which includes the Habitat Diver Specialty Course and the Volunteer Diver Orientation.

PADI Habitat Diver Specialty Certification:
This PADI Distinctive Specialty has been developed specifically to meet the needs of the dive program at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and is required of all volunteer divers.

The curriculum includes: watermanship/scuba skills evaluation, underwater naturalist skills, buoyancy and aquarium diving techniques, and tending training. The course includes classroom and pool sessions, plus three Aquarium dives. Divers who complete the course receive the PADI Habitat Diver Specialty certification card.

The Orientation Course includes: information on volunteer program benefits, history, structure and mission of the Aquarium; policies and procedures; a tour of the Aquarium behind the scenes; incident and emergency management; role of the surface tender and lead diver; animal husbandry techniques and water quality; scientific diving; shark diving policies/techniques; shark behavior observation session; and a tour of the other diving exhibits.
