The Sea of Cortez - known as the Gulf of California - is a breathtaking destination for scuba diving, snorkeling, and exploration. The legendary diver Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez as the "world's aquarium". Dive on untouched walls and reefs abounding in marine life. Encounter large and small whale species, snorkel with whale sharks, dive with playful sea lion colonies and see countless eels, octopus, fish and jumping mobula rays. Bonaire’s waters offer something special for every diver. Novice divers will appreciate the calm waters, reefs that run parallel to shore, and minimal currents. These conditions make it an ideal location to really work on improving those buoyancy skills! And the abundance of marine life living along the shallow drop-off area of the reef slope allows for maximum bottom time, while giving new divers an opportunity to develop a level of comfort and confidence in their newly learned skills.

Additional Facts About Bonaire:

1. Bonaire’s National Marine Park was founded in 1979 and includes the underwater world around Bonaire and even around Klein Bonaire.

2. Bonaire’s Washington Slagbaai National Park comprises of two former land plantations, Washington & Slagbaai. These two plantations once supplied salt, charcoal, aloe extract, and goats for export to Curaçao and Europe.

3. The island has over 22 beaches, of which some sometimes disappear and appear. This depends on the tides and other natural causes like wind and waves.

4. Many people have seen dolphins swimming by between Bonaire and Klein Bonaire.

5. Yellow painted rocks on the side of the road or along the coast mark the dive sites on Bonaire.

6. These yellow rocks can also indicate ‘do not enter’. This is because, for example, it is a marine reserve that does not allow snorkelers or divers. It could also be because birds lay eggs in that area and you are not allowed to walk there.

7. Did you know it is possible to go hiking on Bonaire? You can hike various trails in the North of Bonaire. For example the Dos Pos Trail or the trail via Gotomeer.

8. Sometimes, people on Bonaire come across an iguana chilling in their swimming pool. It looks pretty funny to see an iguana swim!

9. Scuba Diving Magazine’s Annual Readers’ Choice Awards recognized Bonaire as the number one Shore Diving Destination in the Caribbean/Atlantic for the 24th consecutive year!

10. There is a flip-flop tree on Bonaire that has at least 150 flip-flops! Though has anyone ever counted them?

11. Bonaire has colorful, healthy coral reefs all around the island AND around Klein Bonaire!

12. Even though the temperature almost never drops below 25oC (77oF), Bonaire has snow-like mountains!

13. It takes a few days for a ship to load thousands of tons of Bonaire’s salt onto the ship via a conveyor belt. And if it is raining, the conveyor belt has to stop.

14. The stories of 10-15 workers having to sleep in the slave huts around 1850 are not true. Studies prove that each hut was often occupied by only 1 or 2 workers.

15. Because of Bonaire’s own water filtering system, tap water in almost all houses and hotels on Bonaire is good for consumption and delicious!

16. Last of all, Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire confirmed a total of 114 healthy turtle nests in 2016, which makes 2016 the highest nesting year ever for STCB!

So, How Does it Work?

Limitations and Restrictions

SCUBA diving is not without risk. In order to participate in SCUBA training, a completed medical questionnaire stating that you are in good health is required. A doctor’s signature clearing you to participate may also be required. You will also need to be reasonably fit and comfortable in the water. If you are intending to certify a child who is between 10 and 14, we offer a PADI Junior Open Water Diver option. We can explain further when you contact us.

Course Schedule

Currently our Open Water group course runs for two weeks with an initial class orientation, then pool sessions on Tuesday & Thursday evenings. This means meeting at the pool at 6.00 pm. After two weeks and four pool sessions, the course will finish up in Florence, OR where students will complete four dives over the course of two days at local dive sites.

We also offer weekend options or private classes with flexible schedules as needed.

What if I want to do my Open Water checkout dives on vacation?

No problem. We call that an “Open Water Referral.” To complete a referral, you simply complete your eLearning and Confined Water sessions with us. When you’re done, we’ll issue you a PADI Referral Form and help make the arrangements so that you can complete your certification at a PADI facility at your resort destination.

Do you offer private Open Water courses?

Absolutely. To book a private class, simply let us know when you contact us about our course options. Everything else works the same.

Do I need to buy all the SCUBA diving gear before I start my certification course?

No. The only gear you will need to purchase is gear personal to you - a mask, fins, snorkel, boots and surface marker buoy (SMB). We have discounted packages at the dive shop if you are taking a course with us, so be sure to let us know that you are a student diver. All other gear you will need to complete the course and get certified will be furnished to you as part of the overall fee for the course -- no extra charges!

How do I continue learning once I’ve completed my Open Water certification?

We offer a range of options for continuing your scuba diving education. We recommend taking the Advanced Open Water Diver course as an immediate next step. Don’t let the name mislead you! You can take this course right after your Open Water certification. After Advanced Open Water Diver we recommend the PADI Rescue Diver course.

How do you operate with regards to COVID-19?

At Eugene Skin Divers Supply your health and safety is our top priority -- after all, we want you to be able to dive safely! As such, we take all necessary precautions, including maintaining 6 feet of distance, wearing a mask at all times (except in the water), and sanitizing equipment after each use. At the start of your course, we will check out to you all of the equipment you will need for the swimming pool sessions. This will ensure you are the only one using your gear and there is no cross contamination.

Can I learn more about SCUBA diving?

As part of your PADI Instructor training you will also become an Emergency First Response Instructor. Once you become a PADI Specialty Instructor you will be able to provide your students with in-depth information about certain dive disciplines like wreck diving or coral preservation.

The PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer rating denotes a very high commitment to the PADI System of diver training. As a PADI IDC Staff Instructor you can independently teach and certify PADI Assistant Instructors at PADI Five Star Dive Centers or PADI Five Star Dive Resorts and assist PADI Course Directors with the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC).

Next you’ll pursue the prestigious PADI Master Instructor certification, followed by PADI Course Director, the pinnacle of PADI Professional training which allows you to teach PADI instructor level courses.

If you love a challenge and would like to take your teaching to different levels, the PADI TecRec or PADI Rebreather instructor courses might be the right path for you.

Going PRO takes dedication, but there are many options to fit your schedule.
